Office Emergency Preparedness Supplies Checklist

About Risk Reduction at Work

Your workplace has the legal obligation to ensure that the work environment is free of hazards to employees. This includes items that may become dangerous during and after a disaster. Every business should be prepared to cope with the hazards and disasters of today's complex world. Earthquakes pose a constant threat. They are unpredictable and strike without warning.

This was driven home with the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. The area around Northridge is mostly residential, and the percentage of large corporations located there is relatively small. Of these corporations, many sustained heavy damage. What if the epicenter had occurred directly below an area densely populated with corporations such as downtown Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle? Is your company prepared for such an event? The possibility of the next quake occurring while people are on the job is great.
